Application time NOW open for Rhode Island heating assistance under LIHEAP program
Applications for the 2024-2025 heating season in Rhode Island will be accepted starting TODAY. Through the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), the administration anticipates receiving approximately $26 million in grants to be awarded as a one-time payment of up to $1,148 per eligible applicant. Heating assistance grants are paid directly to the household’s utility provider.
“LIHEAP provides an essential lifeline for families facing the loss of heat during the winter months. This assistance plays an important part in helping them stay warm and well at a time that it is most needed,” said Governor Dan McKee. “I would encourage anyone who thinks they are eligible to not delay and complete an application beginning as soon as October 1.”
“DHS is proud to be able assist households with their heating needs. With the usual drop in temperatures we begin to see around this time of year, these heating grants will be a welcome financial assistance for families,” said DHS Director Kimberly Merolla-Brito.
Every year, the federal government allocates funding specifically for LIHEAP. In partnership with the state’s seven Community Action Agencies, DHS will disburse grants to families and individuals through May 1, 2025, or until funding is exhausted. Since funding is limited, households are encouraged to apply early.
Grant awards will vary per applicant with grants ranging from $64 to $1,148, depending on household income. Applying for assistance through LIHEAP does not guarantee an approval and applicants may be placed on a waitlist if otherwise eligible and funding is exhausted prior to the May 1, 2025 application deadline.
NOW, online option:
While the process to apply has largely remained the same this heating season, DHS has introduced another way to submit a LIHEAP application that can be done completely online. The online application streamlines the process to improve efficiency and access to LIHEAP. First-time LIHEAP applicants or anyone preferring in-person assistance are encouraged to contact or visit their local community action agency to apply for LIHEAP.
