Aquidneck Community Table (ACT) today announced the appointment of Tuni Schartner as its first Chief Innovation & Development Officer. ACT is laser focused on building a local food system and economy in Newport County that is fair, resilient, and reflective of the diverse communities it serves.

Schartner is well regarded for her success in driving economic development in Rhode Island and has supported hundreds of local businesses to launch and scale their operations. In her new role, Schartner will work closely with ACT’s new executive director, Rose Jones, to advance innovative strategies that further the organization’s mission and impact.

“I am thrilled to welcome Tuni to our team,” said Rose Jones, ACT Executive Director. “Her experience, grit, and love of community are palpable and will help to propel our organization forward in meaningful ways. Our goal is to ensure everyone has access to nutritious, local foods and an opportunity to thrive. Tuni has built a career promoting just that: vibrant communities that support all residents. I look forward to the energy, fresh perspective, and leadership that she will bring to our efforts.”

Formed in 2016 from the merging of three local groups, ACT boasts 29 years of experience in enhancing food system resilience and equity. The organization manages three popular farmers markets on Aquidneck Island, attracting nearly 80,000 visitors annually and contributing some $2 million to the local economy. Through its community and school garden programs, ACT has donated more than 4,000 pounds of fresh produce to local food pantries.

Schartner expressed enthusiasm for her new role, stating, “I am excited to join ACT and collaborate with this dedicated team to build on the important work being done. Aquidneck Island’s local food scene and agricultural heritage are vital, yet we face challenges with food insecurity. I look forward to working with Rose, the team, and our partners to ensure our island remains a thriving and welcoming place for everyone.”

As part of a broader statewide coalition, ACT is intimately involved in the work to build an equitable and resilient food system in Rhode Island that honors our unique food traditions and strengthens our economy, environment, and people. The organization regularly hosts events and discussions on Aquidneck Island in support of this mission.

A native Rhode Islander, Schartner brings over 30 years of experience in business and community development. She co-founded The Hive RI, Southern RI’s first coworking space, and has held myriad leadership roles, including as inaugural director of Innovate Newport and executive director of District Hall/Venture Cafe Providence.

Schartner is also a founding mentor with RI Hub’s Venture Mentoring Service program and continues to support local entrepreneurs through DESIGNxRI, Social Enterprise Greenhouse, and other initiatives. In her spare time, she enjoys swimming, horseback riding, and spending time with her family.
