To Do in RI: Rhode Island Rose Society Rose Show – Silver Celebration, theme for the 25th

At this time of the year, you might be wondering where you might spend a casual lovely Saturday afternoon. You might also be asking yourself where can I go to enjoy that wafting sweet scent of a multitude of roses. You might want to know where you can go to learn some more about roses.
Well, luckily for you the Rhode Island Rose Society is having their 25th annual Rose Show on Saturday, June 8 from 1:00-3:00pm at the Shepherd of the Valley Church at 604 Seven Mile Rd. in Hope, Rhode Island.
This year’s theme is “Silver Celebration”. Come see the various types of white roses in Silver vases. There are more than 30 classes for competition— everything from hybrid teas to Old Garden roses, from shrubs to miniature roses. Which Red Rose will win that specific class? Which rose will win Best in Show?
There will also be opportunities to learn more about roses. From 1:00 to 3:00 there will be a table staffed with consulting rosarians where you can ask questions about any roses you may have in your yard or which roses will grow best in southern New England. From 1:30 to 2:00 there will be a discussion led by Paul Raymond about growing roses organically. From 2:00 to 2:30 Baldo Villegas from California, will be talking about the little insects that like to eat your roses.

Come to see and vote for the best arrangement. The various classes are: Rosé all Day; By the Light of the Silvery Moon; Anniversary Waltz; Rodeo Rose; For the Love of Roses and the last one is Rose Jubilee—Personal Adornment. The last class should be very interesting as entries will be various types of hats adorned with roses. Will they end up looking like something that you see at the Kentucky Derby? How will people interpret any of the classes? Come and vote for the best fragrance. There is a specific cultural class for that. Will your choice agree with the judges choice?
If you grow roses, you should come and exhibit yours. The time for prepping your roses is 7:30 to 10:00. There will be plenty of people available to help you learn how to present your rose in its best light. The society will provide the vases necessary. If you don’t know the name of your Rose, that’s OK, too, as there is a class just for that… It’s our mystery class. There is also a novice class so you won’t be competing against people who have won multiple Blue Ribbons.
