ART! Providence Art Club new exhibition opening reception, January 22
The Galleries of the historic Providence Art Club will host celebratory receptions to open three new exhibitions on Sunday, January 22. The galleries will be open from 12-4pm and light refreshments will be served from 2-4pm. Artists will be on hand to discuss their work at this event, which is free and open to the public.
On view in the Maxwell Mays Gallery, painters Bee Givan, Kelley MacDonald, and Merle Mainelli Poulton will exhibit together in the show Not Your Average Comfort Zone. A third generation Rhode Island artist and owner of the popular women’s boutique Green Ink, Givan’s work focuses on interiors of the Art Club. MacDonald and Poulton utilize more abstract forms to convey their respective visions. MacDonald’s work leverages color and mark, while Poulton will be presenting a series of paintings on the theme of The Odyssey. MacDonald studied at Wheaton College and Poulton earned her degree at the Pratt Institute.
In the Club’s Mary Castelnovo Gallery, Susan Shaw will share work in the exhibition Right Before Your Eyes. Actively creating work in oil, watercolor, and ceramics, Shaw has exhibited throughout New England and beyond. She earned her undergraduate degree at Temple University. She has pursued additional study under the likes of Wendy Artin and Tom Sgouros.
In the Dodge House Gallery, Charlotte Breed Handy and Richard Kattman will co-exhibit in the show Suggestions. Handy will share smaller scale watercolors that play with subtlety of tone, while Kattman will show largescale paintings completed on a recent artist residency in Greece. Handy is a practicing architect and a graduate of Yale University. Kattman is a landscape architect who studied at the Rhode Island School of Design.

Located along Thomas Street, in the shadow of the First Baptist Church, the Providence Art Club is a picturesque procession of historic houses, home to studios, galleries and the clubhouse. Through its public programs, its art instruction classes for members and its active exhibition schedule, the Providence Art Club continues a tradition of sponsoring and supporting the visual arts in Providence and throughout Rhode Island.
