“Ron & Jen’s Great Escape” 8-25-2021 – Ron St. Pierre & Jen Brien
by Ron St. Pierre & Jen Brien
Se Souvenir Henri
We wonder if local meteorologists and reporters have any disdain towards Jim Cantore and The Weather Channel for stealing the spotlight during major local weather events? This is the kind of stuff that can disrupt our nighttime slumber. While some may feel coverage of Henri was overdone, just as many subscribe to the idiom “it’s better to be safe than sorry.” Washington County residents got whacked the worst with the majority of power outages hitting that area. Governor Dan McKee, while praising National Grid’s efforts of power restoration, wondered aloud about the bigger picture efforts of the company, pointing out the number of outages in Rhode Island was 20 times higher than those in Massachusetts in a per capita comparison, and 15 times higher than those in Connecticut. He’s got a point.
I’LL Take Sexist Comment for 200
Mike Richards didn’t hold down the Jeopardy host too long. The Executive Producer of the game show was elevated to host, only to quickly step down after derogatory comments he made on a podcast called THE RANDUMB SHOW eight years ago resurfaced. Richards mocked women’s weight calling one model a “booth slut” and repeatedly praising “the average white guy host.” The search for a new host reportedly continues with former contestant Ken Jennings and the BIG BANG THEORY’S Mayim Bialik the front runners.
Drawing the Line on Pumpkin Spice
The all things pumpkin spice season’s here. Starbucks and Dunkin’ have ramped up the pumpkin spice game with coffees, lattes, muffins and donuts all flavored with fall’s fav flavor, but at some point you gotta hold the line. Case in point, Hop online reports there are now several pumpkin spice scented face masks to choose from. Yup, pumpkin scented face masks. You can choose from reusable or a one-timer. We’re all for an occasional pumpkin spice coffee, but a pumpkin spice face mask on a 5 hour flight to Aruba? No thanks.
Covid Clips
The TSA has extended the federal mask mandate on flights UNTIL AT LEAST January 2022 and American Airlines is extending its ban of serving alcohol on flights to January 18th 2022.
It was only a matter of time before the cottage industry of COVID Vaccine record protectors surfaced. As the need to show proof you’ve been vaccinated seems to be extending past concerts and flights, there are now sleeves and covers you can buy to protect them. Amazon has a bunch online and we’re sure you’ll soon find them everywhere. It’s a good idea to take a picture of your card, too, and keep it handy on your phone.
Texas End Around
The Paris Independent School District in Texas has made face masks part of its school dress code, viewing it as a possible loophole around Republican Governor Gregg Abbott’s statewide ban on mask mandates. Of course, here in Rhode Island, Governor Dan McKee shifted his position last week issuing an Executive Order requiring all students to wear masks in schools this fall. The move certainly got individual school supers off the hook but I’m sure it didn’t go over big with every parent.
Good News For Toy Lovers
After declaring bankruptcy three years ago, TOYS R US is attempting a comeback, opening up in 400 Macy’s stores just in time for Christmas. The new stores will be built within existing Macy’s stores and mascot Geoffrey the Giraffe will be back to welcome shoppers. Meanwhile Target is making it easier for folks to get their favorite Disney products by expanding in-store Disney shops to 100 locations. No word yet on whether local Macy’s and Target stores are included.
