“I’m so Lonely. I live in Rhode Island”. The Loneliest State in America
Photo: In 2015, street artist, Devin Costa, 19, of Cumberland hung from Providence rooftops to paint messages that read “Lonely as I’ve ever been,” “I love you even when you don’t notice” or “lonely” and “alone.” He was ordered to pay $12,390 in restitution and not to trespass. Fellow street artists and others used the opportunity to begin a more serious discussion about loneliness and depression.
This holiday season is very different from the past. We’re living in the COVID-19 era, which might mean there will be no celebrations, no family gatherings. In other words, this holiday season may be a lonely season for many Americans.
But imagine our surprise when we saw “Rhode Island” was unique in its loneliness factor, being named the loneliest state in America by Click Cupid.
Methodology
Click Cupid, which often measures curiosity factors like this measured 51 U.S states by 7 different metrics (as below) to reveal the loneliest states this holiday season. The higher the OVERALL score – with 10 being the highest possible score, and 0 being the lowest possible – the lonelier the state is.
No one can fully enjoy Christmas without a job. When you’re unemployed, you won’t have money for celebrations. That’s why we take this factor into account.
We looked into the percentage of single-person households in each state.
Many immigrants are still struggling to blend in with their communities. That’s why it’s hard for them to find a companion this holiday season.
Undeniably, the pandemic brings depression, grief, and loss – all bring Americans loneliness this holiday.
We looked into the detailed policies of each state. The stricter the policies, the higher the “loneliness score”.
Such order can make it hard for families to be with each other this holiday. That’s why the stricter the order, the higher the “loneliness score”.
How do we measure up – who is lonely with us?
The top five: Rhode Island, followed by New Mexico, California, New York, and Massachusetts
About Click Cupid
Founded in 2010, Click Cupid began as a dating and advice blog. After online dating began gaining a bit of notoriety, our Editor in Chief, Jason Williams felt interested in finding out more about it.
Jason thought online dating might be interesting to look into but was unsure of which site to even look at. It was difficult to decide because there was not much information available without trying out each site individually. At this time in 2010, online dating was new and seen as a bit more taboo.
Flash forward 10 years, in the year 2020, there are more dating sites than ever. Many of these sites are great, but everyone is looking for something different.
At Click Cupid, we have reviewed all of the dating and matchmaker sites for you, so that you don’t have to waste your time. We highlight the positive and negative aspects of each site, show you real user reviews, and let you know the costs ahead of time.
Our plan is to help you find what you are looking for quickly. We help you to filter through our reviews based on your own specific criteria. You can select exactly what type of site you are looking for, and we also have forums for you to ask, or answer, questions regarding dating sites, relationships, and online dating.
If you are looking for advice on a specific type of dating, or you are looking for an online dating site, we typically have information for you. Regardless of the relationship or “situationship” you are after, Click Cupid most likely has information to help you.

I grew up in charming Rhode Island. There are plenty of things to do there. The gorgeous beaches, excellent restaurants, historic towns, shops, libraries, and parks to name a few. I had friends, but also did a lot of things by myself. Never really felt lonely bc I went out. I had hobbies. Met people almost everywhere I went. You have to be outgoing to an extent. Just go into a store and talk to the sales people. I now live in Florida, but still miss Rhode Island. 12/21/20
